Spring Cleaning: Making Space to Live More With Less

Start with a plan. Before you begin spring cleaning, make a plan for each area you want to tackle. Write down the tasks that need to be done and prioritize them based on their importance. This will help you stay on track and make sure you don't forget anything. For example, if you're cleaning your kitchen, your plan might include tasks like cleaning the oven, wiping down the countertops, and organizing your pantry.

Declutter first. Some of us may never become minimalists, but it’s useful to take inspiration from the principles of minimalism. Since minimalism is all about having only what you need and use, go through your belongings and donate or sell anything that no longer serves a purpose. This will not only make spring cleaning easier, but it will also help you feel more organized and less stressed.

For example, when cleaning your bedroom, you might start by decluttering your closet and getting rid of clothes that no longer fit or that you no longer wear. Sort them into three piles: donate, sell, or recycle. Reduce paper clutter by digitizing bills, receipts and documents into digital files. This not only saves space, but it's also better for the environment.

Think sustainable. Opt for natural cleaning products like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice—better for the environment, but they're also more cost-effective. Instead of disposable cleaning wipes and paper towels, use reusable cloths and sponges to reduce waste and save you money in the long run. Finally, choose sustainable storage solutions like glass jars or reusable containers. This reduces the need for single-use plastic bags and packaging.

Focus on quality over quantity. Minimalism emphasizes the importance of having fewer, but high-quality possessions. Moving forward, make a commitment to yourself to choose items that are built to last and will serve you well for years to come. Also, have you ever considered a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. This reduces excess and simplifies your morning routine.

Break it up. Spring cleaning an entire house in one day can be overwhelming. To make the process more manageable, break it up into smaller tasks and tackle one area at a time. For example, you might clean your kitchen on Monday, your bedroom on Tuesday, and your bathroom on Wednesday. This will help you stay motivated and avoid burnout.

You'll be amazed at how quickly and easily you can get your home in tip-top shape for spring.
