Whether you’re into hidden waterfalls in the woods, exhilarating hikes with spectacular views or love lapping up those coastal view, these road trip suggestions should definitely inspire you to head on the road this season.

Peak District

Snake Pass and Winnats Pass

If you’re thinking about a road trip to the Peak District, make sure not to miss these picturesque roads built for a road trip. Head to the scenic green valley of Winnats Pass, from there you can make your way through Hope Valley. Along the way consider walking up to Stanage Edge, before heading into A57 and the legendary Snake Pass in Derbyshire. The pass with tight corners and twists is not only a great drive, but is rewarded with views of the National Trust’s High Peak Estate.

Atlantic Highway 

This drive will give you the summer feel in England even in late autumn or early winter. The route not only has some of the mildest weather in the UK, but drives through small idyllic villages, green countryside and iconic coastlines. Make some small detours to explore sites like the Bude Sea Pool and Widemouth Bay along the way, as well as spending some time in the idyllic Cornish surf town of Newquay.

High Force

A trip to one of the most impressive waterfalls in England would never be a disappointment. High Force waterfall is situated in beautiful nature in Upper Teesdale. The waterfall is spectacular across all seasons as it is surrounded by a variety of animal life and colourful plant life. The origins of the waterfall formation date back over 300 million years and deserves your respect with its 21-meter drop into a spectacular pool below. High Force can be accessed through the woodland walks on a well-maintained path of twists and turns in the woods.

Snow Roads Scenic Route

Britain's highest public road is a 90-mile drive in the heart of Cairngorms National Park is ideal for a proper winter road trip in the UK. The trip takes you through iconic Cairnwell pass, castles, small whiskey distilleries and includes several viewpoints. Along the way, you can experience rough Scottish nature and hidden gems such as the Linn of Quoich and Glas Allt Waterfall. Look out for the new viewpoint installations by award-winning architects near the Devil’s Elbow in Glenshee, Corgarff and Tomintoul.  

South Devon

South Devon Coastal Route 

South Devon is perfect for a family road trip or a romantic getaway. The coastline, coined the English riviera, stretches for 22 miles and is filled with natural wonders from the historic town of Dartmouth to the sandy beaches and coves in Salcombe and the Torcross on the southern tip of Slapton Sands. Make sure to take some time to explore the parts of the Southwest coast path along the route such as the spectacular rock formation in the valley of the Rocks in Lynmouth.

Italy

Syracuse and the Necropolis of Pantalica in Sicily

Sicily is the ideal destination if you’re seeking some warmth and summer feels in the winter months, with vibrating volcanic landscapes as well as unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city of Syracuse is well worth a visit with rich Greek and Roman history, reflected in its architecture, culture and gastronomy. A short drive away you can find the cave necropolis of Pantalica, where remote natural wonders meet an archaeological treasure. 

Croatia

Plitvice National Park 

The Plitvice Lakes has become a popular tourist destination in Croatia in recent years, and not without reason. By going in fall or winter you will be able to escape the crowds and soak in the spectacular view at one with nature. In winter, the snow falls in the area during the waterfall into a winter wonderland. While in the area it’s worth visiting other mountain regions and forests as well as the iconic coast, such as the valleys of the Lika, Krk, or head over to the north-west to discover Motovun. 

Austria

The Austrian Alps. 

There is something magic about a winter road trip, driving through valleys with mountains covered in white powder and charming alpine villages. Austria is the perfect destination for a skiing holiday, as the slopes are better than in Germany and Italy, while a lot cheaper than Switzerland. Head to Kitzsteinhorn for great powder days and authentic alpine architecture and cuisine. After a few days head to the iconic Austrian alpine valley of Zell am See for some pure relaxation in one of the many luxurious spas by the lake.

The Romantic Road 

The route called Romantische Strasse in Germany became famous in 1950, but is still one of the most iconic road trips in Europe today. The route goes from Würzburg to Füssen in southern Germany, through some of the most iconic sites in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The route is filled with fairytale castles, medieval villages and wine districts before heading into the root of the Alps through the town of Landsberg am Lech.

Vicentina Coast

Located in the south-west of Portugal just above Algarve, Costa Vicentina region is one of the country's hidden gems that hold temperatures of 20 degrees all year around. The area is known for its superb coastal landscapes, world-class surfing waves and beaches. While you sweep around the coast, you will be enchanted by the coastal plateaux with rugged cliffs that hide small beaches. Stop by the small beach village of Porto Covo and Samoqueira beach, before heading to Malhão Beach and the idyllic Portuguese village Vila Nova de Mil Fontes.
