May Van Millingen X Salt-Water
We are delighted to showcase our collaboration with the London based illustrator May Van Millingen www.mayvanmillingen.com
May's work is a wonderful mixture of old world antiquarian style botanical drawings and contemporary pop culture. It’s bold and beautifully detailed with a strong illustrative quality. Her pieces are all hand drawn in pen and ink before being scanned in for the colour to be added digitally.
YOU HAVE SUCH A LOVELY NAME - WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
Thank you! May is an English name and my surname is from Holland.
WHERE DID YOU STUDY?
I went to university in Newcastle Upon Tyne with a work year in London as part of the program.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Inspiration comes to me anywhere and any time but Nature is a great source of inspiration for me. I'm really interested in plants & I'm drawing a series of cacti at the moment. I’ve always been interested in science, and love historical botanical illustrations which are a huge source of inspiration for my work. I also come from a creative background which has inspired my work - my Mum is an artist, and brother a photographer.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ARTIST?
There are so many and all for different reasons! I recently saw Egon Schiele at Somerset house which was very inspiring. Paula Rego's work is incredible, I love her dark depictions of fairy tales.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL WORKING DAY FOR YOU?
I cycle down to my studio, have a coffee and read through my emails.
I'll often catch up with my agent over the phone to discuss any new
work enquiries, then start work. I work all morning then make lunch at
the studio, then try and get away from my desk, even for half an hour,
to go for a walk. I often have meetings in the afternoon, then I'll
work up until about 7, unless I have a big project on, then I'll work
later into the evening.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I do a lot of bikram yoga, and I also like to go running at the weekend. I find cooking relaxing, watching films, visiting galleries and having dinner with friends.
For Salt-Water sandals, May has produced a set of beautiful illustrations that we made into postcards and posters.
Thank you May and watch this space for further collaborations.
