Leonie Freeman - Kids Fashion Photographer
Perhaps growing up in Sweden and Holland is what gave the fashion photographer Leonie Freeman her laidback shooting style and a wonderful eye for the colourful. She studied Fine Art at the University of East London before working as a picture editor commissioning photographs for magazines.
Six years ago she took the leap and became a professional photographer, specialising in kids fashion photography. The relative freedom of a career as a photographer means she can juggle her work and home life. She admits it’s a constant struggle; working after the kids have gone to bed, shooting at weekends and going away on assignment. It’s busy and stressful at times but the balance is that she gets to work flexible time, no two days are the same, it’s fun and creative plus she has lots of time to travel and have adventures with her kids too. You can see a gorgeous campaign that Leonie shot for Salt-Water Europe here A sunny trip to Whitstable.
Leonie lives in Walthamstow with her husband, two children and their cats Betty and Wilma.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY?
My dad winning a giant smurf cuddly toy for me at a fairground in Gothenburg, Sweden, when I was 2. It was bigger than me!
WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION?
George Harrison & John Lennon’s autographs which my Beatles-mad mum got as a teenager in 1966. She bunked off school and tracked them down at home!
WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING AT THE MOMENT?
I’ve just finished watching series 2 of Stranger Things, which was amazing. Also, Motherland – the Sharon Horgan / Graham Linehan comedy about mums on BBC. So hilarious!
WHAT IS ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE?
A lamp, a baby monitor and a stack of books. If I’m lucky there is also a hot cup of tea….
WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?
Too many people to mention… I am a HUGE Bowie fan and was devastated when he died, I would have to say Bowie was one of the most amazingly creative people who ever lived and we were lucky to have been around when he was on this earth. I also admire photographers: Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Wolfgang Tilmans, Bruce Weber.
DO YOU KNOW IN THE MOMENT WHEN YOU HAVE TAKEN A REALLY GOOD PHOTO OR DO YOU ONLY REALISE IT WHEN YOU GET TO THE OFFICE AND LOOK THROUGH THEM ALL?
Both... Usually I realise when I’ve captured something really special and it gives me goosebumps. There is a magic that happens when everything comes together in the shot, sometimes its something completely unplanned and spontaneous, other times you manage to capture something that you have meticulously planned in your head. But with kids you never know what will happen!
HOW DO YOU STYLE YOUR SALT-WATERS?
In summer me and my son live in them. We both have Saltie tan marks on our feet after the summer! I wear them with everything, chilled out in jeans and t-shirt or with a floaty summer dress. I love wearing my rose gold pair dressed up for a night out.
IF YOU COULD GO ON A CITY BREAK THIS WEEKEND, ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHICH CITY WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
New York! I’ve always really wanted to go. Without the kids though!!
IF YOU COULD BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE THING WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Oooh… tricky! I hope I will be remembered for my love of life, sense of humour and ability to see the comedy in situations. That’s more than one thing… sorry!
