Kate Pietrasik - Award Winning designer at Tootsa Macginty
Kate Pietrasik is a womenswear designer who became bored and disappointed with the children's clothing on offer for her daughter and founded the stylish, colourful, unisex childrenswear brand Tootsa Macginty. She has several awards under her belt and an exciting collaboration with Salt-Water in the pipelines for next season. We caught up with her at the studio in Farringdon.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER SALT-WATER SANDALS?
I first spotted them at a trade fare I attended with Tootsa Macginty. I was drawn to the stand decorated with beautiful, classic photographs. I distinctly remember one of Obama wearing them as a little boy.
I love timeless, classic design and fashion so it was love-at-first-sight!
WHERE IS THE MOST UNUSUAL PLACE YOU HAVE WORN THEM?
I wear them most days during the summer so they are very “usual” to me! Although I’ve had them covered in Sangria whilst celebrating the Fete de Pamplona in Northern Spain and tested their “washability” by dipping my feet in the Caribbean sea!
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY?
Probably queuing for bread with my brother. When I was 4 years old we lived in Mozambique for a few years. The smell of fresh baked bread, burning wood and rotting rubbish sends me right back to Maputo.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK?
Eek!? Just one?
The Soterion Misson – Stewart Ross
Tess of the D’Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy
The Horse Whisperer – Nicholas Evans
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?
Hmmm I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a typical day.
When I am in London it’s usually up at 7am, school run, take the tube to the Tootsa office in Farringdon (via Pret for a bag of croissants ….they do fantastic croissants! Who knew?) where I’ll stay and do all manner of jobs from designing new collections to packing boxes or meeting potential investors …until 5pm before dashing off to collect my daughter from After School Club. Then it’s dinner, bath, Netflix and bed!
I also spend a lot of time in the South West of France where the pace of life is much more relaxed and a typical day will involve going for a surf or a walk around the lake interspersed with work at the kitchen table.
HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
Music, Sport …or both. I love playing the piano or I’ll go for a run with something happy and upbeat on my iPod.
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
Marion Cotillard & Jane Birkin & Audrey Hepburn
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
Soggy Almond Croissants, Occasional dodgy pop songs and a peppermint tea and chocolate consumed at bedtime.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SHOP?
For Clothes “And Other Stories” for their trends and styling, “COS” for fabrics, colour and shape and “Whistles” for all of the above plus quality!
I also love browsing in Liberty and Anthropologie.
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?
My 6 year old daughter Ruby. She and I lived alone together for the first five years of her life and I’m so proud of her confidence and her funny, witty manner ….not to mention her fantastic dance moves!
