Alice Chilton - Project Manager at Them Design
Alice Chilton, 24, grew up in North London with her mum, dad and two brothers. Family are still very important to her and even though she has moved to a different area, she still tries to see her parents and grandparents every week, even if it's only for a quick cuppa.
She studied English Literature at Sussex University and now works for Them Design, a graphic design agency based in Shoreditch which specialises in brand identity and communications. As project manager, she is often the client's first point of contact and will see a project through from the very beginnings of supplying a cost estimate through the timings of the project, overseeing the design and client amendments and finally assessing the success of the design solution. She lives in Hackney with her boyfriend, Luke.
WHICH COLOUR SALT-WATERS DO YOU WEAR?
Orange and tan. My mum has a pair too, she wears red.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THEM?
All the colours are really vibrant and they’re easy to wear. I love my tan pair, they seem to go with everything and I like wearing them with my oversized tan handbag.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL WORK DAY FOR YOU?
It always starts with a cup of tea – I can't function without it! We’re a really close team, so we’ll all catch up on each other’s weekends or evenings. We all get on really well and are genuinely interested in what one another has to say – it’s not like awkward Monday morning small talk!
I’ll have planned the week in advance but I’d usually just check in and make sure everyone knows what they’re working on that day. Then it’s on to responding to emails, raising and sending invoices and making phone calls to our clients to update them on the progress of their projects.
I usually can't believe how quickly lunchtime comes around. Our office is set within a beautiful courtyard, so during the summer we often sit outside to eat lunch. When it’s really nice weather one of us will do an ice-cream run.
Then in the afternoon I might have a client or new business meeting to prep for and attend. Every day is different, so it really depends. Whenever I can I’ll write some content for our Behance. I love writing about and uploading our recent work. I get a real buzz from all the feedback we get and it’s nice to get some extra exposure out there for our clients too.
WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST INTERESTING PROJECT YOU'VE WORKED ON?
I’m really inspired by working with the Roundhouse. We’ve been responsible for the creative on a number of projects including Camden Beach and their Creative Projects programme. Working with an organisation that has the interests of young people at the core of what they do is really compelling and worthwhile. It’s also very much the same for working with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
HAVING STUDIED LITERATURE AT UNIVERSITY, DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE AUTHOR?
I think my biggest regret is not reading more since graduating. But I can easily fix this!
When I was little my dad once told me that I’d never look back when I got older and wish that I’d watched more tv. I know that he’s right and he would agree the same couldn’t be said for reading.
If I had to pick one favourite then I’d say Angela Carter – I’m captivated by her engagement with fairytales and myths and her unapologetic determination to challenge the literary canon.
WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
Nowadays more than ever I think celebrities have a duty to teach younger generations the importance of self-worth and of dressing to please you. I’m too old for it to really affect me now but I do worry about how much girls are exposed to at a young, impressionable age. It’s frustrating. Since the age of six and the release of ‘Don’t Speak’ I have loved Gwen Stefani. Whilst I wouldn’t ever want to emulate her style personally, I do get the feeling from her (more than most) that she dresses to suit whatever mood she’s in. She looks comfortable and confident, which is beautiful. I follow her on Instagram and to me she is owning forty-five.
WHERE DID YOU LAST GO ON HOLIDAY?
Gran Canaria and it was quite a while ago now! Until recently my boyfriend and I had been saving up to buy our flat. We moved in about 6 months ago so now that everything’s settling down I’m hoping we'll get round to planning something, even if it’s just a mini break.
WHAT'S ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE?
I don't have one! Since moving in we’re still acquiring bits and pieces of furniture. At the moment I just have a stack of books that I want to read by my bed. On top is just enough room for a cup of tea and an O.P.I Nail Envy Strengthener polish.
WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?
My auntie. She was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years back and since beat it. She smiled and laughed all the way through her excruciating treatment. I never knew strength and courage like hers existed until I saw it with my own eyes.
IF YOU WERE GIVEN A SURPRISE DAY OFF WORK WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Having answered your questions I think I’ve realised that I’d most like to spend it reading a good book…
